Your Ballet Curriculum: A Roadmap to Teaching Success

"But what about creativity?" That's often the first question I hear when discussing ballet curriculum. Here's the truth: a curriculum isn't a rigid set of rules—it's more like Google Maps for your teaching journey. Think of it this way:

The curriculum is your map. It does not tell you how fast to drive but it does make sure you reach your goal. The curriculum

  • shows multiple routes to your destination

  • helps you avoid dead ends

  • keeps you oriented when you take detours.

The key principles are your fuel stops. Just like you must know where the gas/charging stations are on your trip, you need this information---otherwise you will never get to your destination. It's key to your success. Key principles include

  • essential technical elements

  • must-have foundations

  • regular checkpoints for success.

The new vocabulary are like restaurant stops. If you're driving across the country you're going to want to eat a little bit each day, not stuff yourself on Day 1 and then wait 1,000 miles before you eat again. New vocabulary are

  • properly spaced for optimal learning

  • prevent overwhelming your students

  • create a natural progression from one unit to the next.

The expectations to advance to the next level are your landmarks. They let you know you're close to your goal (if the goal is the next level) or an awesome hotel/resort to stay at (if your goal is longer-term). These elements all add up and are

  • clear indicators of progress

  • celebration points along the way

  • guidance for next steps.

The beauty? Just like a road trip, you control the pace. Want to stop and spend extra time on something that sparks joy? Go for it! Need to take a different route because of your students' needs? The map is still there when you're ready to continue.

This approach works for everyone:

  • Competition studios building strong technical foundations

  • Recreational programs developing proper basics

  • Pre-professional tracks mapping detailed progressions
