talking about solutions for uncomfortable ballet tights

Every year, dancers consider quitting ballet for one surprising reason: uncomfortable ballet tights. While some might dismiss this as trivial, experienced teachers know better---when a student mentions tight discomfort repeatedly, it's a real barrier to their dance journey that deserves our attention.

After reaching out to our dance community on TikTok, parents and teachers shared these solutions:

Flexible Class Policies

  • Consider allowing bare legs in class

  • Avoid requiring specific brands for regular classes (save brand requirements for performances)

  • Remember that different fibers and dyes can be allergens---what works for one dancer may not work for another

Practical Ballet Tights Solutions

  • Try going up one size, especially if compression is the issue

  • Look for 100% cotton tights or the highest cotton blend available

  • Always hang-dry tights---dryer heat can cause uncomfortable pilling

  • Apply lotion (especially anti-itch formulas) before putting on tights

  • Consider stirrup tights, which many dancers find less restrictive

  • Look for styles with knit waistbands

  • Try wearing tights inside out (a surprisingly effective tip!)

  • For some leotard styles, wearing bikini-brief underwear can add comfort

Community-Recommended Brands

  • Capezio Ultrasoft

  • Revolution

  • Body Wrappers

  • Zarely (noted for exceptional softness but also pricey)

Money-Saving Tip:

Consider purchasing new-in-package secondhand tights to test different brands more affordably.

Remember: our goal is to keep dancers dancing. Finding the right tights isn't about lowering standards---it's about removing unnecessary barriers to joyful participation in ballet.
